How to make non-polarized caps

Post by Goldfinger »

For cost and size convenience I have been making my own non-polarized caps to use for hi-fi conversions. To make a non-polarized cap you solder two identical caps together in series, with the negative leads tied together.

In this case I used two 10uF-16 volt Tantalum's. Since caps in series cut the capacitance in half, you end up with 5uF-32 volts non-polarized.
As Tantalum's are cheaper and smaller than polyester or polypropylene, I have been using them more and more.
